divorced 15 years ago , now the court doesn’t have records showing we were ever divorced?
been re-married twice since first divorce. Neither of us have court documents anymore and the lawyers distroyed theres after seven years. Where can we find proof that we were divorced. He has been married for fourteen years and are they really married if we can’t prove we divorced?

A lot of this depends upon the state laws where you are. Your best option would be to check with a local attorney. I’d recommend a different attorney than the ones originally used, however. It sounds like one (or both) of the original attorneys might have screwed up. A divorce isn’t legally final until all of the paperwork has been submitted timely to the court – unfortunately, yours wouldn’t be the first case on record of a couple finding out that their divorce was never officially final. And yes, it is very likely that neither of your current marriages would be considered valid. (Again, this depends upon the state law, of course.)

The court lost the records?
Oh my. Those kinds of things are supposed to be well kept, and the fact they lost them isn’t good.
I would go to the county courthouse where the divorce decree was handled, and raise hell, and get copies of those records. Dont stop chewing people out and until you get ahold of someone who can give you some satisfaction. Somewhere some record has to exist, and THEY have to find it, because you wont have access to those records.
Talk to both your lawyer and his, and see if you can get a signed and notarized document from both of them stating what they can remember of the case (if anything) That should be enough, with notarized notes from you and your ex as well to get a judge to sign off on a divorce decree, or something, that will say you WERE in fact divorced all those years ago. Because, yes, if you weren’t divorced back then, then you BOTH aren’t married now. (Legally)
You need to get this straightened out with the county courthouse.
