    It is illegal unless you tell them you are recording!

    Certain answering machines will do it easily enough, but keep in mind that some states require either a warrant, or permission from both parties to record the conversation. You could be putting yourself in jail.

    You may either, inform them verbally they are being recorded, or be sly – use a beeping sound that signifies the conversation is being recorded.
