   I dont know about for free, but I know you can get a criminal background check from a local substation for like $3 – $5.

   You can find criminal convictions and civil lawsuits on your state’s judicial website. You just have to find it. Usually it something like http://www.ohiostate judiciary.com or http://www.michigan statecourts.com Google (name of your state) judiciary or courts. Find that site and go to "case look-up." Generally, you can just type in the name of the person and all cases will come up. That will take care of court records. I think complete background checks can only be done by law enforcement agencies, but you might call a private investigator. If your state licenses p.i.’s, they’d have access to all records. I’m a lawyer and I can only get case backgrounds.
