The media has ways of getting documents, and sometimes it’s not legal nor ethical. Police reports aren’t given to "just anyone" who wants to read them. You have to have a reason or subpoena to get those records in many places. The same with court records. I’ve been with attorney’s that I have worked for when we went to courthouses to get files and they had the attorneys show their credentials before we could even look at the files. Nothing is "public knowledge" really. You can go to the court house and request to see the files and see what they tell you, they might let you look at it in front of them, or you might have to buy copies (.25 cent to $1 per page). No one is going to mail you someone’s record.

You will have to go to the court and ask for the records. They are public but you many have to pay for a court adminstration fees. I do not know the cost since each court district will be different.
